18h00 : Sampdoria - Reggina

Sampdoria v Reggina

GENOA, November 30 (Serie A) - Sampdoria coach Walter Mazzarri failed at a former club last weekend and will be hoping for better fortune against another ex-employer on Saturday when his team host Reggina.

Six days ago, it was the club Mazzarri coached before moving to Reggina, Livorno, who defeated his current club 3-1.

``I have a lot of respect for my old clubs, but I am doing everything within my capabilities to win for Sampdoria,'' he said on the club's website.

``It is a question of sportsmanship and respect - people claimed that at Livorno I had been calmer than usual on the bench, but that was a calculated choice.

``I thought that being quiet would mean my team would win, but it did not work out that way.

``For me, these 90 minutes are games like any other - games which we want to win.''

Facing his former assistant Renzo Ulivieri, who is now the current Reggina coach, could present other difficulties.

The pair know each other well from their days together at the Calabrian club, and Mazzarri will have to dream up new tactics to fool his rival.

He said: ``I played for him and then we worked together and we have talked about football for years.

``It is an additional problem, if you like. Whatever I think of doing, it is easy for him to counter it.''

Which is why he will not be giving any hints as to who will feature in his team and, with only Vincenzo Montella and Gennaro Delvecchio in the treatment room, he has many choices.

Striker Antonio Cassano is part of the squad, although he will probably be on the bench.

Reggina arrive in Genoa a week after defeating Samp's city rivals Genoa 2-0 to move out of the bottom three in Serie A.

Ulivieri may be tempted to name an unchanged side from that match, although captain Francesco Cozza is back from suspension and will be a contender for a place in the midfield.

The Reggina coach is also looking forward to meeting Mazzarri again on Saturday.

``Walter has moved on as have I, but if he has learned anything from me, then I have got to be happy,'' he said.

``His Sampdoria team has a bit of Genoa and a bit of Napoli in it, but it looks very similar tactically to the Reggina under him.

``I expect them to react after losing against Livorno and that is not a good sign for us.''

However, his side will want to extend their unbeaten run of games to three and remain above the bottom three for at least another week.

Samp, on the other hand, can move into the top six with a win, so the stakes are high for both clubs.

AC Milan v Juventus

MILAN, November 30 (Serie A) - Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon insists AC Milan's poor home form will count for nothing as his side travel to the San Siro looking for the three points which will see them top the Serie A table.

The Rossoneri, who travel to Japan in December to contest the Club World Cup, have been in great form on their travels but are yet to win in front of their own fans, picking up just four points from a possible 18.

And Buffon has warned his teammates to make sure that Milan's first home victory does not come on Saturday.

``Milan haven't won at home yet,'' said the experienced keeper. ``And according to the law of averages sooner or later it will have to happen, but we won't be the sacrificial lambs.

``Milan are European champions and soon they might become World champions, they have great players and clearly matches against them always present great difficulties.

``We have maximum respect for the Rossoneri, but we also have great faith in our ability.''

With Internazionale not playing until Sunday when they travel to Fiorentina, Juventus will go top on goal difference should they win the previous evening - something which has given added spice to an already heated clash.

The Bianconeri will be full of confidence after their 5-0 thrashing of Palermo last time out, but have struggled on big occasions this term.

They have not won a game against any of the top six, with draws against Roma, Fiorentina and Inter and defeats at the hands of Udinese and Napoli.

``We are strong and we know it,'' David Trezeguet told www.juventus.it. ``But now is the time that we must win a key game, possibly on Saturday night at the San Siro against Milan.

``We have to play with humility, but knowing that we are not inferior to anyone. Against Palermo we played a great game and now we must do that again against Milan.

``We go to the San Siro to win.''

Juventus star Mauro Camoranesi is out of the clash after being hit by a further injury blow.

The winger missed six weeks of the season through injury before returning against Empoli and playing in three consecutive games against Inter, Parma and Palermo.

But the 31-year-old pulled up in training with severe muscle fatigue and coach Claudio Ranieri has decided not to risk him.

Marco Marchionni or Raffaele Palladino will deputise for Camoranesi while Jonathan Zebina will once again replace Zdenek Grygera, who is still not match fit after coming back from injury.

Juventus will be boosted by the return of Giorgio Chiellini from suspension, while Alessandro Del Piero, who came off the bench against Palermo to score two goals, is set once more to be used as a potential super-sub.

Ronaldo is definitely out for the Rossoneri following yet another injury setback.

El Fenomeno limped off the pitch during the warm-up before the Champions League match against Benfica and Milan's medical staff will continue to try to get to the bottom of his problems.

Milan's 1-1 draw on Wednesday night saw them qualify for the Champions League and midfielder Clarence Seedorf believes his side can keep up their good week and take their first home victory on Saturday.

``Now we have the home game against Juventus who are a team doing well physically,'' said the Dutch star. ``They're in the upper half of the table, it's a key game and I expect it to be a great match.

``Milan are also doing well and now we need a great Milan to beat Juventus and get the first home victory.

``Compared to other games played at the San Siro it will be different, because smaller teams are always defensive. Against Juve I think we'll have more space because they are a team with many champions.''

Fiorentina v Inter Milan

FLORENCE, December 1 (Serie A) - Fiorentina entertain Serie A leaders Internazionale on Sunday in what is expected to be a fiery encounter at the Artemio Franchi stadium.

The Viola have suffered a slump in form recently following a home defeat to Udinese and a draw at lowly Reggina, and will be looking for three points to keep up the pressure at the top of the table.

The return to the bench of coach Cesare Prandelli following the death of his wife will also provide the players with further motivation against Inter.

The teams were in action during the week in European competitions and fatigue could be an issue for both teams.

The size and quality of the visiting squad could prove decisive although the hosts welcome back some key names.

Following Fiorentina's 1-1 UEFA Cup draw against Greek side AEK Athens, midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic felt the team had put in a decent performance.

``It wasn't easy to play in that climate although we managed 90 minutes of quality following the orders of (assistant coach) Gabriele Pin,'' he said.

``In the second half we created a number of goalscoring opportunities which we should have maybe taken better advantage of.''

The Serbian also insisted the joy at scoring his first goal came second to the display, adding: ``What was important tonight was to go forward in the competition, not score my first goal, although on a number of occasions their goalkeeper was excellent.

``We are in good shape and we must continue like this. I don't know if we will beat Inter but we are definitely a good team that can demonstrate its value and quality.''

The Viola are set to make a number of changes from the side which drew at Reggina. Manuel Pasqual returns to left-back following suspension while key defenders Alessandro Gamberini and Tomas Ujfalusi return from injury.

Riccardo Montolivo is suspended so Kuzmanovic will take his place alongside Fabio Liverani and Marco Donadel.

Up front Adrian Mutu returns to the line-up alongside Giampaolo Pazzini and Franco Semioli in the trident attack.

Mario Alberto Santana and Per Kroldrup miss out through injury.

Inter will be looking to maintain their status as the only unbeaten team in Serie A and will be feeling confident as they have only lost to their hosts once in their last nine meetings.

Former Fiorentina midfielder Luis Jimenez, who scored the third goal in Inter's 3-0 Champions League victory over Turkish side Fenerbahce, could be handed a start against his former club should Dejan Stankovic fail a fitness test.

``The goal was good for me, it has freed me. It has been a while since I played and I needed an evening like this. Here I am,'' Jimenez said of the midweek win.

Nerazzurri coach Roberto Mancini is without Patrick Vieira, Francesco Toldo, Luis Figo and Rodrigo Aparecido Cesar through various injuries.

Catania Calcio v Palermo

CATANIA, December 1 (Serie A) - Italian football will be on red alert this Sunday when Palermo travel to Catania for a Sicilian derby.

Less than a year ago the teams played at the Angelo Massimino Stadium and an eruption of violence outside the ground led to the death of policeman Filippo Raciti.

The entire country is still coming to terms with the shooting of Lazio fan Gabriele Sandri three weeks ago, a tragedy which sparked fan unrest in the cities of Bergamo and Rome.

``I hope Sunday's game will be a battle on the pitch and a sporting celebration in the stands,'' said Catania general director Pietro Lo Monaco.

Francesco Guidolin was in his third stint at Palermo at the time of last season's violence at Catania and after leaving in the summer he has returned this week for a fourth spell.

Guidolin replaces Stefano Colantuono who was sacked after last Sunday's humiliating 5-0 defeat to Juventus.

``Returning to Palermo is like coming back home,'' said Guidolin.

Although the Rosanero sit in eighth position in the Serie A standings, they have only won one of their last eight games.

The dismissal of Colantuono was a surprise to the players, who felt they must also shoulder the blame.

``All the players are disappointed that Colantuono is no longer the coach,'' said Palermo captain Andrea Barzagli.

``If he was sacked it is only our fault but in football it is always the coach who pays the price when things don't go well.

``However, the table is still looking good and we will head to Catania to get back on track.

``We have a coach on the bench that we all know, so it will make things easier.''

Catania, who are just three points behind Palermo in the standings, will be desperate to return to the winning ways.

The Elefanti have not won in their last four games and the pressure is on Silvio Baldini's side to deliver.

``Since Tuesday, we have felt the pressure regarding this game,'' said Baldini. ``We are convinced that our fans will help us and support us to try to get a positive result.''

With Palermo fans banned from travelling to watch the game in Catania, the hosts will have plenty of support.

``I would have preferred to have had the Palermo fans also at the Stadium,'' admitted Baldini. ``But I'm talking about the true fans not the violent kind who should be in prison.''

The Elefanti have failed to win on the road this campaign and will be looking to make amends for their disappointing away form on Sunday.

Catania have been very solid in defence when playing at home, having only conceded three goals in six games.

The hosts will have all their players available while the visitors will be without injured defender Ciro Capuano.

However, Palermo welcome back striker Fabrizio Miccoli and defender Leandro Rinaudo from suspension.

Atalanta v Napoli

BERGAMO, December 1 (Serie A) - Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has admitted he has big plans for the club in the near future ahead of his side`s trip to Atalanta.

De Laurentiis has steered the club from Serie C back to the top flight since taking over as president of the Partenopei in 2004.

After a solid start to the season, Napoli now find themselves sixth in the table with one eye on Europe but De Laurentiis says the real work is just beginning.

``Our club is a continuous project that goes forward,'' he said.

``I tell our fans to be calm because our club will continue on the same path as we had designed right from the start.

``No players will leave our club because in the future we will need our most important players.

``In order to have a great team you not only need 11 quality players but you need at least double that.

``Only like this can we face challenges like European competitions in the future.''

Despite everything being rosy at the Stadio San Paolo, De Laurentiis is happy to play the waiting game after seven years outside of Serie A.

``In order to create something important in football you need time and patience,'' he added.

``To pretend that everything will be done in one day is the wrong attitude.''

The Partenopei have collected 18 points in 13 games this campaign and De Laurentiis is satisfied with the work done by coach Edoardo Reja, who guided Napoli to promotion last season.

``Reja has been able to get results with work,'' he said.

``I believe him to be a great man and a good person. I admire his loyalty, his professionalism and his ethics. I intend to keep Reja for a long time.

``We should not create too many expectations because that would only put the players under pressure. Let's just continue to have fun and grow.''

Having only managed to take one point in their last three encounters, Napoli fans were relieved as their team returned to winning ways in last weekend's 2-0 triumph against Catania.

The result marked their fourth victory at home, but Reja's men will face a big task on Sunday when they travel to Bergamo to meet in-form Atalanta.

Gigi Del Neri's side are level on 18 points with Napoli and have yet to be beaten at home this campaign.

The hosts will fancy their chances with the Naples-based outfit having only managed one win on their travels.

Atalanta proved tough opponents for Serie A leaders Internazionale last Saturday and the Milan club were made to work to clinch a 2-1 triumph.

The Bergamaschi will have an added motivation to take three points on Sunday as they travel to Turin the following weekend to meet Juventus.

The good news for the visitors is that they will have all their players available.

However, Del Neri will be forced to alter his starting XI with defender Claudio Rivalta unavailable having sustained a thigh injury this week.

Moreover, midfielder Diego De Ascentis and striker Simone Inzaghi will serve one-match bans on Sunday.

Roma v Udinese

ROME, December 1 (Serie A) - Roma will be looking to stretch their six-match unbeaten run when they face fellow high-fliers Udinese at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

The Eternal City giants will again have to do without injured captain Francesco Totti, Alberto Aquilani and Simone Perrotta for the encounter.

However, with in-form striker Mirko Vucinic and veteran defender Christian Panucci impressing in their absences, Roma fans have no reason to worry.

Vucinic scored twice in Tuesday's 4-1 Champions League victory at Dynamo Moscow, guaranteeing the Romans a place in the last 16 for a second consecutive season.

Coach Luciano Spalletti praised Montenegrin forward Vucinic, who has proved a reliable replacement for Totti.

``Vucinic is a great player,'' said Spalletti. ``The fact that my team is not hindered by absences is a merit of the club that have put quality players at my disposal.''

Panucci, who struck the winner against Genoa last weekend before scoring the opener on Tuesday, admits things could not be going any better for him.

``Things are just falling in the right place for me right now,'' said the veteran defender.

``The important thing is that we have qualified for the next round of the Champions League and although we still have to improve, now we can focus on the domestic campaign.''

With Scudetto contenders Juventus facing a difficult challenge at AC Milan this weekend, Roma will be hoping to take advantage in order to keep up the pressure on Serie A leaders Internazionale.

Roma go into the encounter level on 25 points with Juve and Udinese and trailing three points behind Inter.

Udinese travel to the Italian capital inspired by their positive run which has seen them collect 13 of a possible 15 points in their last five games.

The Bianconeri have shown little signs of weakness having found the target seven times in the last five encounters and only conceded two goals in as many games.

Moreover, Udinese have not been beaten on the road since September 26 when they lost 3-2 at Genoa.

``Our thoughts are always the same, to maintain a high level of concentration and play with a mind free of thoughts,'' said Udinese coach Pasquale Marino.

``Taking into consideration the power of Roma we should pay even more attention to not conceding more than necessary against them.

``We aim to leave our pressures outside the changing room door. We must continue to work with this attitude, without wasting any mental energy which is invaluable for maintaining the right concentration.

``For me this is a very difficult game because we face a team that is in contention for the Scudetto.''

The hosts will have to do without defender Matteo Ferrari, who serves a one-match ban.

Marino has received good news ahead of the encounter with Giandomenico Mesto and Gyan Asamoah having recovered from their respective injuries.

However, defender Andrea Dossena remains doubtful with a muscular injury while Felipe is out of action through suspension.
